Pat Hart

Art with a capital “A” was not a big item in Alberta when I was a child. I was fortunate my Aunt Ethel in Ireland was a professional water-colourist, so we had paintings in our home. My mother was a fine pianist, so we had wonderful music in our home. My father was interested in sculpture so we were surrounded by small white stone reproductions of Classical Italian works, including many nudes. The fine art of graffiti was illustrated for me when our baby sitter took a bright red pen and graphically detailed the naked breasts and genitalia on all the sculptures. Who could fail to respond to such inducements?
My more formal training began at the Banff School of Fine Art and continued for four years at what is today the Alberta College of Art. My artwork is a very personal expression and style which has evolved slowly over the years. I attempt to distill an idea or image to its essence, to state it simply and in some cases understate it, so the viewer may add his or her imagination to mine. My technique in watercolours is very spontaneous, although the idea, in some cases, has been generating in my mind for years after the intitial sketches were done.
