Artist Statement
My forays into plein air watercolours and collage have naturally emerged from a lifelong penchant towards improvisation. Plein air records how stray moving things have affected me on often inhospitable terrain. Whether its wrestling with long grass, wind, noise or the clock, each watercolour involves a sense of urgency or even exasperation. Collage has taken me indoors to explore other chance demands. Tearing up paper limits my control, as do the colours of the available paper; it’s paint by numbers where I invent the numbers and their shapes. Somehow, harmonies and form emerge out of odd, clashing blocks of colour. Most recently, acrylic on canvas is offering me a refreshing opaqueness, texture and convenience. I hope all these media may soon clash and merge in a synthesis.
